Population growth brings with it the exacerbated use of natural resources, elements made available by nature that can be used by man. Thinking about this relationship, environmental education emerges as a training and information process, seeking to develop a critical awareness of environmental issues. Thus, given the vulnerability of changes in the environment, it is necessary to know the main proposals for environmental education for its sustainability and conservation, seeking to mitigate the impacts. The objective was to analyze proposals for environmental education that emphasize sustainability and conservation of the environment, as well as research studies with didactic tools for teaching the environment; exemplify teaching methodologies that facilitate the mediation and approach of the theme and point out proposals for environmental education that can be worked on in schools and communities. This is a literature review, using Google Scholar and SciELO databases, doing research in Portuguese, in the last ten years, with environmental education, active methodologies, environmental education, conservation and sustainability being the keywords. Documents that did not mention pedagogical methods for teaching the environment were excluded from the research, therefore, those that mentioned such methods were included. 57 studies were found and 14 were considered. In 2013 it had the highest production number. It was found that environmental education should not be worked on in isolation, but in a multidisciplinary and transversal way, covering both the internal public of the school and the external public, involving family members and the community in general, all with a view to conservation and sustainability of the environment.
